We visited Spello as part of our one-week road trip in Umbria and we loved this small town. Below we would like to provide you with some recommendations on things to do in Spello, Italy. 

Short History Of Spello

Spello is a lovely Umbrian village with a rich past. It was built by the Umbrians and became Hispellum, a Roman colony. Well-preserved gates and ruins show the Romans’ impact on the settlement. In the Middle Ages, surrounding nations fought for Spello. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Baglioni family improved the town’s architecture and culture. 

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, with Pinturicchio’s paintings, is one of the town’s most important historical sites. These works showcase Spello’s creative tradition. Spello offers a unique combination of old and modern experiences by preserving its historical beauty while embracing modernity. You’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time as you walk through its small, winding lanes, surrounded by history. Today, Spello is known for its gorgeous flowers, historical landmarks, and pleasant attitude. 

Fun Facts About Spello

Infiorate Festival: It takes place every June and Spello becomes an exhibition of color. Thousands of petals are used by locals to make beautiful patterns and religious images on carpets and murals they paint on the streets.

Ancient Olive Trees: Spello is famous for its excellent olive oil, which you may buy to take a little piece of Spello home with you or sample in local cuisine.

Roman Heritage: The Roman ancestors of Spello are still evident today. The town is home to several remarkably preserved Roman gateways, including Porta Venere and Porta Consolare.

How To Get To Orvieto

Spello By Car 

If you prefer driving along beautiful highways, driving to Spello is a practical choice. Get off at Orte on the A1 freeway heading towards Florence from Rome. Take the SS75 towards Foligno, following the signs for Perugia; exit at Spello. After leaving Florence on the A1 heading towards Rome, get off at the Valdichiana exit and continue straight ahead to Perugia and Spello. 

Spello By Plane 

Approximately 20 kilometers apart, Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi Airport is the nearest airport to Spello. Spello is easily accessible from the airport either by taxi or auto rental. Nearby is Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, another choice for international passengers. You have two options for getting to Spello from Rome: hire a vehicle or take the train. 

Spello By Train 

Spelo is easily accessible by rail, with frequent connections to Rome, Florence, and Perugia, among other important Italian towns. From the heart of Spello, you may easily reach the rail station on foot. The average train journey from Rome to Spello takes two or three hours and transfers at Foligno.

Santa Maria Maggiore also referred to as the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, is one place you really must visit. The amazing Baglioni Chapel is attributed to the well-known Renaissance painter Pinturicchio. These brilliant, considered classics, depict biblical themes. With its elegant architecture and serene atmosphere, the church itself is a wonderful illustration of fusing the Gothic and Romanesque styles.

Contained inside the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the Baglioni Chapel is famous for its exquisite Pinturicchio paintings. These vibrant pieces of art show scenes from the Annunciation, the Nativity, and other biblical events. Art lovers will find the cathedral to be a masterpiece and a stunning illustration of Renaissance inventiveness with its fine details and brilliant colors. 

Church of Saint Andrew

Chiesa di Sant’Andrea dates back to the twelfth century and is a stunning example of a medieval church. It is a peaceful place to visit due to its inner tranquility and Romanesque architecture. Every year, in June, there is the Infiorate di Spello Flower Festival. The streets of Spello become magnificent flower carpets and murals made from thousands of petals during this event. Villa dei Mosaici

Excellent Roman mosaics may be observed at the Villa dei Mosaici archeological site. Established in 2005, this house has beautifully carved and surprisingly maintained floor mosaics depicting animals, geometric patterns, and mythological figures among other topics. It provides a breathtaking glimpse into Roman art and manner of life. 

Acquedotto Romano di Spello

An outstanding work of ancient engineering is the Acquedotto Romano di Spello. Built as a water supply for the town, this Roman aqueduct is still standing today as a monument to the brilliance of Roman architectural design. It is a nice point of interest if you are exploring the well-preserved Roman remains in the area, including the town walls and other historical sites.

Old Town of Spello

Old Town Spello has a lot of flower-adorned balconies, stone houses, and meandering streets. You seem to have stepped back in time to explore this charming area.

One of the best ways to experience the town is to simply get lost in its maze of alleys, popping into local shops and cafes along the way. Be sure to make your way up to the highest part of town, where the streets become even narrower and the flower displays are at their most extravagant.

Microbirrificio Diecinove

Microbirrificio Diecinove is a tiny, artisan brewery in Spello. Sample many handmade brews here, each with unique flavors and qualities. Taking advantage of the brewery’s tours and tastings, guests may sample some excellent, locally created beers and learn about the brewing process. 

Cantina Sportoletti

The famous winery Cantina Sportoletti is located not far from Spello. It is famous for producing outstanding wines, the vineyard invites visitors for tastings and excursions so they may savor their delicious products. Wine lovers will never forget the stunning setting of the vineyard and the kind greeting of the Sportoletti family. 

Church of Saint Severinus

In Spello stands the little but charming Chiesa di San Severo, often referred to as the Church of Saint Severinus. It has beautiful paintings and a serene environment. The chapel, a lovely spot for reflection, honors Saint Severinus, the patron saint of the town. 

Sant'Anna

Sant’Anna is an oratory located in which dates back to the 14th century. Nestled in a serene area, this small church, also known as Cappella Tega, is characterized by its simple yet charming architecture. Although it is permanently closed to the public, the oratory is notable for its beautiful frescoes that adorn the interior. The surrounding landscape is very nice and while you are there you can admire the chapel from the outside.

This is another beautiful church in Spello. It is a famous icon because of its Romanesque style and old-fashioned charm. It’s a beautiful place to visit and learn about Spello’s church history because it has beautiful frescoes and a calm mood inside. 

La Bottega Di Teresa

La Bottega Di Teresa is a charming local store that sells a wide range of handmade goods and gifts. This cute store has handmade ceramics and tasty local foods. It’s a great place to find one-of-a-kind gifts and souvenirs to remember your trip to Spello. The owner is very nice, which makes the place feel even cozier. 

How to Get Around Spello

The greatest way to explore Spello is to walk. The village is small yet full of charming cobblestone lanes and little-known sites. Walking together, we enjoyed finding charming cafés and little stores along the road. Because certain slopes might be very steep, wear comfortable shoes; the breathtaking vistas make the effort worthwhile. 

Biking in Spello
One more high point of our vacation was renting bikes. It’s an entertaining approach to see more of the stunning surroundings. We loved riding across the town and surrounding countryside after renting our bikes from a neighborhood store. It’s a terrific opportunity to take in Spello’s unspoiled beauty and the roads are bike-friendly.

La Cantina di Spello 

Excellent traditional Umbrian food is served in a warm, rustic setting at La Cantina di Spello. Our favorites were the thick, tasty sauces and the handmade pasta. The wine list is first-rate, with a lot of regional wines, and the service is friendly. 

Enoteca Properzio 

Restaurant and wine bar Enoteca Properzio serves you a great range of regional wines to go with gourmet fare. We tried a lot of wines and ate bruschetta, cheeses, and cured meats throughout our amazing dinner there. 

Ristorante Il Pinturicchio 

Taking its name from the well-known Renaissance painter, Il Pinturicchio provides a sophisticated dining experience with a menu that includes both classic and modern fare. The delicious pastries and the fresh fish were great. Our supper was made more special by the sophisticated surroundings.

Day Trips from Spello

Assisi

Distance from Spello: Approximately 10 km (20 minutes by car) 

Why Visit: Saint Francis and Saint Clare are both said to have been born in Assisi. See the Basilica of Saint Francis, which has magnificent Giotto paintings, as you meander through the ancient alleyways of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Don’t pass up the tranquility and amazing vistas from the Rocca Maggiore stronghold. 

Must-try: Try traditional Umbrian dishes like porchetta (roast pork) and torta al testo (flatbread) at local trattorias. 

Gubbio

Distance from Spello: Approximately 45 km (1 hour by car) 

Why Visit: Gubbio’s Roman theater and well-preserved medieval structures provide a trip through time. See the renowned Ceri during the May Corsa dei Ceri event, take the funivia (cable car) up to Monte Ingino for expansive views, and stop at the Palazzo dei Consoli. 

Must-try: Taste the local delicacy, crescia (flatbread), with pecorino cheese and prosciutto. 

Perugia

Distance from Spello: Approximately 40 km (45 minutes by car) 

Why Visit: With a rich Etruscan past, Perugia, the capital of Umbria, is well worth seeing. See the magnificent Palazzo dei Priori and the National Gallery of Umbria with its remarkable Renaissance art collection as you tour the Etruscan-enclosed medieval town. Try the well-known Baci chocolates from Perugia! 

Must-try: You should try a gelato from Gelateria Veneta – a local favorite! 

Best time to visit Spello

Spring is the best time to visit Spello. It has mild temperatures ranging from around 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). The countryside bursts into life with colorful wildflowers, making it perfect for scenic walks and exploration. 

Fall/Autumn (September – November) 
Fall brings cooler temperatures averaging between 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). The landscape transforms into shades of gold and orange as vineyards and olive groves prepare for harvest. 

Activities: Experience the Olive Oil Festival in October/November, celebrating the new olive oil production. It’s a great time to taste fresh olive oil and learn about local traditions. 

Summer (July – August) 

Summer in Spello can be hot, with temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C (79°F to 90°F). It’s ideal for enjoying outdoor activities, although it can be busy with tourists.
