We recently visited the beautiful Amalfi Coast and spent some days in the stunning seaside village of Positano. Positano is a popular destination and can get quite crowded, especially during the busy summer season. Most people visit it as a day trip on cruise ships, on guided tours, or on a road trip on the Amalfi Coast. By staying overnight, we were able to experience a quieter and more peaceful side of this beautiful place. Let’s see together the best things to do in Positano for a remarkable experience.
How to Get To Positano
You can reach Positano in various ways. Firstly, you should take a plane to Naples International Airport, which is located about 30km away from Positano. From the airport, take the Circumvesuviana train to reach Sorrento, which lasts 60 minutes. From there, you can get to town by bus, taxi, car, or by Ferry departing from Marina Piccola.
Rent a Car Amalfi Coast
The best way to experience the Amalfi Coast is to rent your own car! Driving there has its challenges but it is a unique experience. We recommend booking well in advance using price comparison sites like rental cars if traveling in the peak summer season.
Where to park in Positano
When planning a trip to Positano, keep in mind that the parking process might be an issue due to the narrow streets and the limited space, especially in the high season. You should consider leaving your car in a parking lot such as Parcheggio Carpineto which is in the center of the town, or Montepertuso and Nocelle Areas which is a bit further but has lower prices and a shuttle service. The parking cost, in general, ranges from 3 euros to 8 euros per hour. If planning a visit to Positano in high season, the best option would be to arrive early or find accommodation that includes parking facilities. Overall, Positano is not that big a city, thus public transportation is the most convenient solution.

The church is decorated with beautiful wall paintings, and you cannot miss seeing the Black Madonna. A religious portrait that is believed to have been brought by the Saracen pirates in town. The legend says that during a storm, the portrait cried out to be let down. A pirate threw her in the sea and when they eventually reached the town safe, they constructed the church to honor her.

Nearby the city of Positano, you can find wider markets selling handmade ceramics, souvenirs, and clothing besides fresh ingredients. You will see on your own, that a small walk alone, is enough. Hike Montepertuso il Buco
Located above Positano, you will find the Montepertuso a small village with an amazing view of the Amalfi Coast. The hiking trail that begins in Positano and reaches Montepertuso offers a unique experience, looking at the Tyrrhenian Sea and the surrounding area from above. The route is considered medium to difficult, while it has some steep spots on the climbing and the paths are rocky but you’ll be rewarded at the top. The name “Il Buco” results from a huge hole in a mountain, standing as a highlight for pictures. The trail is well-marked and takes about 2 hours to be completed. Make sure to begin hiking early in the morning, as well as wearing a hat for protection from the sun.

Begin your exploration by visiting the Duomo constructed in the 11th century holding a rich history, and then continue by the Cloister of Paradise which is next to the Duomo and hosts beautiful gardens and white columns. Feel the relaxing vibe by walking along the famous Lungomare dei Cavalieri, the seaside promenade, while watching the sunset. End your day by dining at a restaurant by the sea, tasting local, fresh seafood.
Sorrento
You cannot plan a day trip and not include visiting Sorrento. Sorrento is also an active town, providing many beauties, such as the historic center, where the Piazza Tasso is placed and considered a gathering place. Around the main square, you will find many shops selling local products like leather items and cafés as well. Visit Marina Grande, a known fishing village with a great view. Dive into the clear and refreshing waters and after, you can enjoy fresh seafood at the restaurants above. Ravello is a less-known town near Positano that you can reach by bus or a taxi. It takes 30 minutes approximately. Hosting a variety of villas, Ravello is known for its rich history holding ruins of Roman ages and the beautiful views. Visit the Duomo, a church designed with a baroque style that includes a museum showcasing various artifacts.
Capri
Another, nice place to visit is Capri Island, only 40 minutes away from Positano by ferry. Visit the Blue Grotto, the most famous cave in Capri, characterized by its vibrant blue color. Continue by visiting the main square of Capri called Piazzetta di Capri surrounded by various shops and cafés with outdoor tables, ideal for relaxation. Keep on going to Villa San Michele, a majestic residence known for its stunning gardens and views. Don’t miss taking the chairlift to reach Monte Solaro, the highest point of Capri, to take some photos of the Bay of Naples and the surroundings.

Saraceno d’Oro is a casual small place where you can have pizza by the slice amongst other options. Other street food options include fried seafood called frittura, and the panini, a must-try Italian choice. A recommended place we visited is the Bar Internazionale.

Il San Pietro di Positano is a five-star hotel placed on a cliff, that has an amazing view of the sea while the facilities include a private beach, a pool, and a Michelin-starred restaurant. Le Sirenuse is an equally amazing hotel with a unique beauty. It has rooms that face the Positano and the Amalfi Coast and facilities like a spa, pool, and gym.
For more affordable options, Hotel Poseidon is a great choice. A hotel with spacious, comfortable rooms that offer a view of the sea. Located in the center of the town.
If looking for low-price accommodation, πlaces like La Casa di Peppe Guest House & Villa feature a more traditional accommodation, being one of the oldest villas in town. The staff is friendly, and it won’t take you much time to feel it like your home.
The Best Time to Visit Positano
The best months to get to Positano would be Spring and Autumn. In Spring, the weather is more pleasant while the heat hasn’t risen that much yet and the crowd is less. The flora is blooming, making it ideal for hiking and exploring the nearby locations. In Autumn, the weather gets cooler and most of the tourists are leaving. You can still visit the beaches and enjoy your time away from the crowds with a quieter atmosphere. Autumn is the harvest season for Italians thus, it is more likely to taste fresh products at restaurants.
